Christmas Must Go On!

Last November 8, Super Typhoon Yolanda ravaged Cebu. One of the many casualties was the giant Christmas Tree at the Fuente Osmeña circle. Fuente’s giant Christmas Tree is the ultimate symbol of the holiday season in Cebu. When its lights are on, it means Christmas has officially started in the island.

The construction of the tree usually begins around October. So, basically, the crew needs two months to prepare it for the December 1 lighting ceremony (also the kick-off of the yearly Pasko sa Sugbo celebrations.) This year, due to the typhoon, workers had less than thirty days to finish rebuilding the tree.

Last December 1, as scheduled, the Pasko sa Sugbo celebrations was officially opened. Present during the event were top city officials headed by Mayor Mike Rama, Miss Cebu 2014 candidates, and the Lhuillier family. The Lhuillier family is the official sponsor of the tree. They’ve been doing it for so many years.

Although the tree was only half-done, I didn’t see anyone complain. A half-finished tree is better than no tree at all! Thanks to the tireless men and women who worked double time to get the tree standing. (Work on the tree will continue, don’t worry. :))

This year has been horrible to Cebu and the whole country. A dazzling giant tree of light is just what we need right now. It may not be the most awesome looking tree around, but it’s still OUR tree.
