Visita Iglesia is a yearly tradition of visiting 7 churches to pray and meditate. The activity is done in the evening of Maundy Thursday. It is said that your wishes or petitions will be granted if you manage to visit all seven churces. I think this practice is usually done in the evening as walking from church to church in the heat of the sun can get too tiring.
For this year, we chose the Sacred Heart church as our starting point.
Just behind the Sacred Heart Church is the Archbishop’s Palace.
Our third stop was the St. Ignatiu’s Church inside Camp Sergio Osmeña.
Then, we went to the Sto. Rosario Church.
Just a few meters away is the University church inside the San Carlos University campus.
After that, we walked to the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral for our 6th stop.
Our seventh church was none other than the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.
Next year na pud puhon! 😀
God bless you amigo…
Wow, seven churches! God bless you & your family abundantly. Enjoy your Easter.
Except for some hints of Gothic architecture, I could not have recognized the USC (now SCU) chapel had you not mention it. I use to serve mass here in the 60’s as working student. Man, you bring me back. Visita Iglesia was also a great chance to walk hand in hand with a girlfriend away from the view of parents and/or chaperone in the 60’s.
Ley thanks for the nice photogs! did not even know all the churches you mentioned….. USC can’t remember this ones but sto. nino of course i knew was just there w/hubby sinulog 2009
thanks for sharing these photos, ley. makes me guilty for not being active in church during the holy week as i was in my cebu years, heh heh… except easter sunday of course!!
Aha! Yan pala ang ibig sabihin ng Visita Iglesia, thank you Ley.
Good Luck, may your wish comes true…
Happy Eggster Hunting
nice!
the new look on the cebu metropolitan cathedral is very nice but sometime on when you hear mass.. the gold color is an eyesore! but for aesthetics its grand and austere… i think i have read on a newspaper that erap estrada donated chandeliers for the cathedral’s renovation…
In Visita Iglesia you are to adore the Altar of Repose of the 7 churches you are to visit. It is in Maundy Thursday that the consecrated Holy Eucharist is transferred and reserved at the temporary tabernacle of the altar of repose for the next day- Good Friday’s communion for no masses and consecration of hosts is celebrated during liturgical observation of Jesus’ death. Altar of repose stands as the temporary altar before Easter for churches will strip off their main altar where the masses are usually held during those days. Altar of repose can be found inside churches or a place near a church, it is usually adorned with bounty of flowers and must be well-lighted. I must say, the only not so sorrowful to look inside the church during those days.
