Old School Danao

Okay. So I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who noticed this. You see, I think Danao City has a huge huge chance of making it big in the heritage tourism arena. I mean, every time I pass through this city, I see age-old structures along the national highway which are really gorgeous. They always remind me of the heritage village in Vigan and the azucareras in Negros. Danao, I’ve been told, was a huge huge deal in the past (and I think it still is). And  its old structures pretty much tell us how booming the place already was during the time when people in other parts of the archipelago were still in the basic of things. I really think Danao City should take it to the next level. A lot of people are interested in these things, you know. Hehehe.

Anyways, here are some photos I took during my quick drive to Carmen. Hope you like ’em.

A row of abandoned warehouses (I think).

An old publishing house. The sign reads:
‘Bagong SUGA’ Mantalaang Senimana – Mogula Matag Biyernes

I think this is an old warehouse.

I think this is the main sugar mill. You won’t miss this structure when you’re driving through Danao.

I think this was a mess hall/restaurant/cafeteria before. Not sure, though.

  1. Ley, I never saw it that way when I had the chance to pass by Danao. I just see it as “old structures” and not really something amazing. But looking at the above photos it’s a whole new look. I love the PP.

  2. Hey!! Ley, nice to know you visit CARMEN, im very happy and looking forward for your shoots there.

All that buildings belong to the Durano. Way back they have paper mills, Dancar ice, cement plant, sugar mills, sands (bowling), dry dock , a hospital now become aged home or a Nursing School. As far as i know some foreinger lease the other business. That old warehouse is the gun factory now. Hello to Kenneth Giango, si tita myrna ne.

    Rock on DANAO

  3. Inday Myrna is right,

We were lucky to tour the “Gun Factory” several years ago. It is amazing what those craftsmen can do with a chunk of metal, a hacksaw, a drill press and some files. NO POWER EQUIPMENT, no lathes and NO A/C. Just a few guys working by hand.

Those Durano businesses were originally owned by “Don Ramon Durano Sr.” the Grand Patriarch of the town. He managed to keep them through the Marcos years but they were broken up after his death.
