You guys know that Sinulog is my most favorite time of the year. I’m usually very excited to walk the streets, take photographs, and just see the grand performances. If you’ve been following this blog, you’ll know that I wouldn’t miss it for the world. But I guess life just has a funny way of reminding us that we can’t control everything. That no matter how well-planned your future is, you just simply have to adjust as things WILL happen along the way.
I broke my camera before 2018 came to an end. I was doubtful that I could buy another one just in time for the Sinulog, but I was hopeful. Then, as the Sinulog season drew near, I was suddenly faced with other equally important issues that needed to be dealt with. Should I spend my money on a new camera and an expensive photo contest ID? Should I just stay at home on Sinulog Sunday? But what about all the scenes I couldn’t capture? What about my blogs?
Eventually, I decided to skip Sinulog this year. Not because I wanted to but because things just suddenly fell into place. See, as soon as I made up my mind, I got invited to become a ninong. In Mactan. And the baptism was to be held on Sinulog Sunday, as well. And you know what the best part is? All the other godparents are my friends! Suddenly, I realized that it’s ok to miss things once in a while. That it’s ok to be away from Cebu even when it’s Sinulog. That it’s ok to do something different sometimes. I’m sure I’m going to be ok. And I’m sure my Niño will understand.
I spent a big chunk of Sinulog Sunday in Mactan. Somehow, singing Batobalani sa Gugma in a church other than the Basilica brought a special kind of smile to my face.
By late afternoon, our group was headed to Ayala Center Cebu to watch the fireworks display scheduled at 9 in the evening.
And that night, just before the fireworks show started, we found a perfect spot in Ayala and just sat on the ground, whipped out our phones, and waited for the spectacle to begin.
And for the first time in a really long time, I felt that although I missed 95% of Sinulog Sunday, this Sinulog was one of my best Sinulogs ever.
I hope you guys had a wonderful Sinulog. Pit Senyor, everyone!
