Oslob Church Revisited

Here are some photos of the Oslob Church ruins. The church was gutted by fire a few months ago. The photos below were taken by Uzi during his recent trip to the town of Oslob.

  1. are they planning to rebuild the church? …….. it looks like it has a good bone…. it shows the true test of time, the remains still looks amazing!

  2. This tragedy has greatly affected a lot of people, and I share their sentiment. However, being inside the burned church brings me to an elevated aesthetic experience (my thinking perhaps is tainted by the horrible way Filipinos cheaply repair old churches with finished cement and industrial paint), a feeling that me and my art professors at the site shared.

I have given my photograph series the title, “perfection in a fracture”. As author of these photos, I hope to enlighten everyone that beauty, in fact, can still be found in decay and rust.

Old churches and belfrys have been “restored” in such a way that none of the features of the original are visible. Ceiling paintings, visual evidence of cultural heritage, are slowly being defaced by a single-color industrial paint in the name of “restoration”.

I say let the church remain in ruins. Being inside the roofless structure actually makes one think that heaven has opened up.

  3. kon akoy pabut-on, dili lang gub-on ang walls sa simbahan kay lig-on pa kaau na kay 1 meter plus gud ang thkness, butangan lag mga steel posts nga maoy modala sa atop, puro nalang steel, dali pa mahuman aron dili mawala ang pagka heritage sa simbahan.

  4. all that remains in the once beautifully aged structure.. one of cebu’s oldest…

it’s ruins could speak of its beauty long time ago..

gosh, i cannot just imagine how people could be so irresponsible.. do you know the reason why the church was burned? all because of one person who left some appliance turned on while he is out of town somewhere.. whatta….

  6. I felt so sad looking at the pictures of the ruins of Oslob Church. Ive been there a lot of times during my high school and college days when I simply regarded the church as one of the old churches in Southern Cebu. Later I viewed it as a historical piece of religious architecture not to mention the centuries old artifacts in the church and convent. I even appreciated it more when I stumbled upon in the internet the site http://www.simbahan.net with its historical, artistic and scholarly account of its belfry. I remember that praying inside the church gave me a sense of awe and wonder knowing how our Catholic faith withstood the ages through these old churches. But, now I wonder why God let the fire gut this place of worship through mere carelessness. Maybe there is a message to the Oslobanons. Maybe you did not care enough for your own church. Maybe you seek other places of worship in search of instant miracles, forgetting that the same God and the same Mary are with you ready to help you in your needs, forgetting that there was a miracle in your midst, your own church. Now you need a miracle to restore your own church to its former glory and you need not to go to the touted sites to ask for this miracle – because the miracle is within you.

  7. we were there two days after it burned and it was still smoldering. i remember it well before it burned as i attended regular services when i was there. actually i was born in oslob and was buptized in this church. and i remember that it was burned the first time , and re build and it was beautiful. i would like again as it was.
