Solemn Foot Procession 2019

cover-procession

Last January 19, 2019, the annual solemn foot procession was held. The solemn foot procession is the most important and the second most-attended event during the whole Sinulog season. During this event, the image of Senor Santo Nino, together with the image of the Virgin Mary and the image of Saint Joseph are paraded through the major thoroughfares of Cebu City. Attended by millions of Cebuanos and devotees, the event is held one day before the Sinulog Grand Parade.

The parade begins at around 1:00 pm. However, because of the massive number of people who take part in the event, the head of the parade reaches the Fuente Osmena area at around 3:00 pm. The carriage carrying the image of Senor Santo Nino reaches the same spot about one to three hours later.

Fuente Osmena at around 3:00 pm.

I positioned myself inside the Fuente Osmena circle to get a good view and so that I didn’t have to move around frequently and I got a good view of the parade.

There was plenty of space inside the circle, too, so I was able to walk around and take photos of Mango Avenue and the area in front of Robinsons Mall.

Finally, at around 3:00 pm, the head of the procession reached Fuente Osmena.

Senior High Students helped secure the route by serving as human barriers.

Slowly, the crowd got thicker as the images drew closer.

Finally, a few minutes later, the image of Saint Joseph arrived in the area.

This was followed several more minutes later by the image of Virgin Mary.

Nursing students never fail to take part in the yearly activity.

Finally, arriving with a big and solid security support, the image of Senor Santo Nino arrived just before 5:00 pm.

The beautifully decorated carozza of the Santo Nino slowly moved through the excited crowd. Viva Pit Senyor!

After the procession, I took photos of the scenes and goings-on in the area. Check out the photos below:

Henna Tattoo sessions ongoing for those who want to be edgy and ‘cool’ during the grand parade the next day.

This was what Fuente Osmena looked like almost an hour after the procession passed through the area:

Armed personnel were on stand by in cases of emergencies.

Sinulog shirts were selling like hot cakes. The designs in this stall were amazing.

Take a look at the t-shirt designs from the store. They were all beautiful.
