In Photos: Holy Friday Procession in Oslob

The town of Oslob is probably one of the most religious places in Cebu. Considered one of the island’s oldest towns, life in this sleepy town is built close to (or revolves around) its magnificent church.

On Maundy Thursday, when tourists and out-of-towners started pouring in, Oslob was one busy community. People were trying to make the most of everything before all activities came to a halt on Holy Friday.

On Holy Friday, most (if not all) stores in Oslob are closed, businesses are suspended, activities are put on hold and time just literally stops. From the early morning to three in the afternoon, Oslob becomes a ghost-town and no one can be seen in the streets.

But at four pm, the Oslobanons come out of their homes and silently line up for the solemn procession which lasts until past seven. With their candles, the people walk the dark sidestreets, quietly praying and mourning the death of Christ.

Before the procession, the carros are prepared at the covered court just across the street.

Beautiful local flowers adorn each carro bearing the different statues

The statue of the mourning Virgin Mary is clad in black and purple.

Parishioners are gathering outside the church minutes before the start of the annual procession.

The carros carrying the different saints are now in place.

It’s interesting to note that Oslobanons also line up behind each carro.

Five minutes before the start of the procession, more people have arrived to join the annual tradition.
