Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort: The Perfect Getaway

Although Cebu is such a tiny city, life here can sometimes be very fast and hectic. During the rush hour, getting stuck in traffic can be as easy as spotting Koreans in Ayala. Cebu is a growing metropolis. But sadly, Cebu is growing far too rapidly that Cebuanos don’t know how to react. It’s pretty obvious that Cebuanos still aren’t ready for the hurried and soul-less lifestyle some people in other parts of the country are already accustomed to. They say this is the price we pay for progress. But must we resign ourselves to this fate?

When you live in a small island like Cebu, it is impossible to remain focused on only one thing. In the midst of constant foot races and chaos, you’ll soon find yourself wanting to once again hear the sound of the waves or the soft hush of the cool afternoon air. After all, before all of THESE happened, Cebu was a sleepy little city. Back when things were a lot less complicated, people burned dried leaves under the mango tree in the late afternoon and spent the evening singing well-loved transistor hits over a glass of tuba.

But as we move forward, we have to face the inevitable. That things will never be the same. That things will continue to change whether we like it or not. And that the only way to survive is to adapt.

And before I get too melodramatic, let me just relate all these directionless rants to this post. Hahaha. I’m just basically trying to say that although things can get a little panicky at times, we Cebuanos are still very fortunate. The stuff that other people travel many hours and days for just to see and experience are just around the corner. That in the morning, you may wallow in the negatives of urban living, but after just a three-hour bus ride, you can enjoy a completely different scenery .

They say that in this time and age, it is extremely difficult to enjoy the best of both worlds. But what can I say? I guess we Cebuanos are just extremely lucky.

Well, go on! Pack your bags and loosen up. Sumilon Island is waiting for you!

To make up for all the holidays this month, our office has decided to extend our work hours. In short, a huge part of the first half of December will be spent in front of the computer. I know. That sounds really messed up! Also, Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort is like one of the most exclusive resorts in the country. I would never in my whole life have enough cash to splurge on an overnight stay in this super high-end resort. So, I trust that you understand why this trip is kind of a huge deal for me. Haha.

Okay, for the record, I DID NOT pay for this trip. A friend just made a terrible, terrible mistake of asking me “Would you like to visit Sumilon Island?” My reply was (I was shouting) “WHENNNNNNNN?????????” Haha.

Anyways, before planning a trip to the island, it is wise to know the boat schedule.

Cebu to Sumilon Island
7:00am, 9.30am, 11.00am, 12.30pm, 200pm, and 4.30pm

Sumilon Island to Cebu
9:00am, 10:30am, 12:00nn, 1.30pm, 3.30pm, and 5.30pm

Β The trip from the city to Oslob is usually around 3 hours. But although I know this,Β I got on a south-bound bus at the South Bus Terminal at 4:30 am. You do the math. Yep, I missed the 7 am trip. Haha. (By the way, if you’re booked, boat transfer is free. I think.)

I reached the town of Oslob at around 8 in the morning. I told the driver that I was getting off at the Sumilon Island boat dock so I wouldn’t miss my stop.

Or, you can just look out for this sign.

A few meters down and you’ll reach the holding area. Which, by the way, already looks like an expensive beach resort.

At the reception area, I met Yvonne. She’s very nice and accommodating. After giving me a glass of lemmongrass juice, (apparently they do it in all Bluewater Resorts. Remember my experience in Maribago? Hehe.) she gave me a run-through of what to expect in the island. After the short discussion, she excused herself to let me enjoy my juice and the wonderful view.

Keep in mind!

I will never be a fan of lemongrass juice, though. πŸ™

While waiting for the 9:30 trip, I walked around and snapped a few photos.

The holding area looking really nice in the early morning.

There she is! Looking hauntingly beautiful.

The nice-looking jetty is perfect for selfies and jump shots. Haha.

Finally the boat from the island is here. Guests getting off the boat.

A few moments later, we were on our way to the island. Bye for now, Cebu! πŸ™‚

Sumilon Island is looking very pretty so far. So green!

The friendly boatman is ready to throw the rope. Can’t believe I’m finally here!

Just ten minutes after I left Cebu, I’m now finally in Sumilon! Enjoying the short walk to the reception area.

The reception area looks exactly like the one in Maribago. This one, however, doubles as a restaurant.

Wow! Christmas in Sumilon!

Check in is at noon. So, the friendly staff suggested that I deposit my bags so I could start roaming the island. She said that there are plenty of things to do in Sumilon.

The restaurant is quiet and lovely. Perfect!

And the view of the infinity pool. Amazing.

After leaving my bags, I started walking around to cover as many areas as possible. This is the shower right next to the infinity pool. Love the wooden enclosure. Very creative.

Reminds me of Greece!

Through the branches of a tree, I caught glimpse of Sumilon’s virgin beach. Very lovely.

If I could stuff this scene in my bag, I would. It’s that’s amazing in person.

And the water is crystal clear. Such beauty!

Full view of the beach. This island is paradise, yo!

Dinner with a view. This spot is perfect for that!

Map of the island located near the restaurant.

To sleep or not to sleep.

The island has a natural salt-water lake which is thriving with life. And the view is to die for.

I shall get back to you tomorrow, you kayak you!

The walking trail. I’m going to have to post a separate entry because the trail is just too special. Do watch out for it.

Here’s one of the amazing things you can see during your trek. Wow.

White parols!

Before noon, I decided to go ahead and eat. I got Lechon Kawali. Wasn’t expecting much. But when I got this, I was floored! Very good-tasting too! I finished too cups of rice! Haha.

After lunch, I was told that my room was ready. Cool! A friendly staff grabbed my bags and took them to my seaside room. Along the way, I saw this. Sumilon island has two docks. This one is used when the tide is high.

One of the awesome things about the resort is the abundance of swings, hammocks, beds, and benches. Each one offering a different view and a different experience.Β

This one, for example, sits on the edge of a rock. Beautiful.

And then, my first glimpse of the cabins. (jaw drops)

Fantastic view.

Wooden stairs leading guests to a pocket beach. Wow!

My neighbors! Haha.

And then, I saw this. Oh. My. Gorgeous!

The big ass HDMI TV and the dresser.

I couldn’t wait to check out the bathroom. And then, BOOM! Glass roof and all the bamboo you can think of. Impressive!

The big ass mirror in front of the bathroom is an excellent touch.

The huge sofa sits right in front of the sliding door. So, if you feel like letting fresh air in, you just have to open the door and enjoy the view. Sweeet!

And outside the room, these recliners!

This one is situated a couple of meters away. Love the grass!

After that shot, I went back to the room and slept like crazy. Haha. Woke up at four in the afternoon and decided to tour other parts of the resort. This spot, though. Oh how I’d love to see my family sitting here one day.

I also got the chance to tour some of the island’s most exclusive quarters. This one right here is a villa which offers an excellent view of the island. Let’s check it out!

Your very own pool. I can’t believe all these amazingness I’m seeing! Excuse my behavior. For the uninitiated, I don’t get to experience this sort of thing often. Heck, this is my first time even! Everything is new to me! Haha.

And the bathroom is EVEN better!

This other villa joins two sleeping quarters. There’s the pool, of course, and a big ass sofa in the middle.

After I successfully managed to pull my jaw up, I decided to move on. (It was very difficult, though. Hahaha.) Now, it’s time to hit the beach!

And WTF! Wow!

Paradise found!

View of the other side of the island. Love the blue and the green!

Hello, mainland CEBU!

The island has numerous pocket beaches.

Can I just go ahead and put my name on this one now? I’d like to take this one home.

Before sunset, I went back to the pool area to enjoy the view. Different shades of blue!

I don’t normally drink beer. But the view is just. Ugh!

And the club sandwich! Writing this description made me hungry. And I just ate.

After dark, the restaurant transformed into pure awesomeness.

I won’t even describe this anymore. No words! Haha!

And for dinner, I had pork-chicken adobo made just the way I like it.

Afterwards, I got this three-layer chocolate cake! I shall sleep smiling.

Needless to say, I had one of the most comfortable sleep in recent history. The following morning, I woke up to this! I think Satchmo is hungry. Haha.

But first! Haha.

Satchmo was reading one of the leaflets in the room. I almost chocked on my coffee when I saw this.

For breakfast, I had sausages, bread, fruits, and lots of cake. Hahaha.

Did I say cakes?

After breakfast, it was time to check out the hammock. Haha. This is the life!

I decided to go to the lake to go kayaking. And then I saw this. The glamping area. Glamping is ‘glam camping.’ It basically means going camping while trying to make yourself feel that you’re not camping. These big tents have beds and all other features of a regular room.

The lake is AMAZING! Fantastic view!

I don’t really know what this is but I saw a lot of fish. So, I’m guessing this is the fish-feeding area.

The trekking trail high above the lake.

I spent the rest of the morning trekking and kayaking and swimming and all sort of things. I really didn’t want to leave. Haha.Β But I had to take the 12 noon boat trip so that I’d be in the city by 4 pm. One of the saddest moments in my life. Haha.

Goodbye Sumilon! πŸ™

I hope we’ll meet again some day!

Ten minutes later, I’m back in mainland Cebu.

I’ll miss you!

It’s really a perfect getaway for rich people indeed!!

  2. My friends and I were very lucky visit the island on 1997, for free! The resort was deserted by the previous owner so all the facilities were closed. But we enjoyed the scenery, the white sand beach and the pristine water. We didn’t have to pay anything but the boat that brought us there. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.
Someday, I am going to visit this place again. πŸ™‚

  3. Amazing shots as always I was thinking of staying there in June next year as I will visit my property
in Oslob and meet with builders for quotes on a possible beach house..dreaming at this stage!!

Darn, I hate reading your blog knowing that you’ve already had the chance to visit the dream land I wish to be someday. But, here you are able to get in there fore free!

Whoa! I really wish I’d have the same privilege as your’s haha πŸ˜€

But, really thanks a lot ofr the narrative. I am sure I will soon visit this place too. My graduation plan is to be in this place, and that shouldn’t come any nearer than 4 years later. So, I hope by that time, I would already have the sufficient budget to enjoy at least one night in this marvelous island πŸ˜€

Suyaa jud nako nimo bai. Haha πŸ˜€

  6. Thanks for your blog i have already a pre-tour to Sumilon. it is one of my dream vacation there. but the price equaled to my bonus so i need to save.hehe i hope my husband agrees we’ll go there for our next honeymoon.:-) Thanks again for the wonderful pictures and comments.

  7. LOVE LOVE this! If Cebu has any saving grace, it’s the beaches and resorts. Yes, I don’t think we’ll ever lose the provincial sensibility yet because of all these nice, relaxing spots. I guess it keeps the locals from getting as soulless as Manila (not to offend it, but they have nothing on Cebu in terms of natural beaches and some open spaces).

I’ve never even been to this place, and it doesn’t even look like the Cebu I usually remembered – more looking like Bali mixed with the Mediterranean countries. I miss being on vacation now…

  8. No matter what some person said about the place. still awesome paradise to spend your time with your honey for 3 days and 2 night . beautiful island. I’m sure we will visit that place someday soon.
