Clean And Green Sibonga

Like the Carmen plaza, the town plaza of Sibonga is really nice. It’s perfect for afternoon walks and long after-supper chit-chats. And the park is just a couple of meters away from the really nice town church. And right beside that, is a line of centuries-old houses.

And yeah, I would have to add that the entire town is clean and green. And if I am correct, the local government is making sure that the old houses are well-preserved. So, kudos to the local officials of the Municipality of Sibonga for an amazing job.

  1. never been to sibonga but its next of places i need to go when i come back home, i am just sooo amazed by old historic homes outside cebu city, i noticed this when we drove from the city to moalboal….. i love historic homes! if only i have the dough to restore one in the US and live on it….

  2. Really nice clean and green town Sibonga,
    Superb municipal hall and plaza,
That first 2 old houses are gigantic, lovely

    1. the first old house in the picture is actually the “kumbento” or the rectory/presbytery/parochial house where the priest(s) live.

  3. totit ocampo invited us to visit sibonga one time. he was a great host and the town is so nostalgic, can’t explain why. i remember that tree behind the arbor (2nd photo). it was huge!

  5. Ley, this is beautiful! Hopefully, other Cebu province LGU’s will take care of their municipalities like Sibonga or Carmen…This is a real inspiration. Thanks for sharing!

  6. This is great indeed and kudos to the townleaders of Sibonga to preserve the park and spaciousness.
I get jealous and disheartened when I see nice preserved places like this in Cebu and while my Consolacion has gotten very chaotic. When I was growing up in Lacion, there was a nice open space fronting the municipal hall which is up on a hill while you can see clearly the San Narciso church on the side of that “park like” space. There used to be a few swings in that space, some townmates used to play tennis in an open court or play volleyball; we learned to ride bikes in that space without the danger of doing it in the actual road. It had a great potential to be a real park since pine trees lined the other side of that space and would have preserved the view of the town hall up the hill with its terraced landscaping, the Lourdes grotto on the side as well as the church grounds. Since then they tucked the High School in that space, you can now barely see the town hall from the road and the spaciousness of the church plaza is gone. I visited from the US a few years back and had a mass for my departed parents in the church and the noise from the disco music of an activity from the HS made it impossible to hear the priest. It is such a shame and very disappointing to me. I wish I have the money to bring back that picture in my mind that I had when I was a child. It was certainly poor planning on how things should have been located. I hope it will be a lesson on how zoning and planning should be done for future projects.

    1. Your exactly right and this started during the administration of Mayor Bebs Pepito that he converted the park to a Municipal High School. And later on they closed the road on the right side leading to the Municipal Hall to accomodate the new 3 stories building. So, at this point the view of the pak and plaza was completely gone and still they spend their budget that was allocated for park and plaza that doesnt exist anymore. Well, i also beleived that they approved more variances in thier time which does not conform with the zoning ordinance that they themselves passed. I hope that in the future that the new set of officials is already planning to move the municipal hall on the new site in cansaga bay. They should make a comprehensive plan that includes open space for the kids to play and i this way they can have a good park and plaza later on that will add the beauty of the new hall. In this way the old complex will be later on be converted to a public libray on the ground floor and in the upper floor will the hall of justice (Municipal Court). Thanks a lot for having an opening discussion for Consolacion at least with your greivances on our town will open their eyes how to conserve the beauty that exist when you were a kid. Again sorry to hear your dissapointment and We do hope that new nice pictures of consolacion can be uploaded since the old view no longer exists. Thanks and have a good one.

    2. hai,,,,, i really miss sibonga so much and i cant wait to go home there…i really miss that place.it is very boring here in cagayan de oro……..hope to go home soon….huhuhuuhuhuuhuuhuhuuhuuh

  7. “This house looks amazing. I bet it looks better inside.”
kanang murag big old house tapad sa our lady of the pillar academy bai kay. convent na sa our lady of the pillar parish. naka sud nami sko family diha (invited sa pakals sa fiesta) .. scary kaau kay kahugnu-onn a ang floor. 3 ra nag stay diha.. 2 ka pari ug cook.. imagine that big then 3 ra mu.. ^.^

but yeah.. the entire town is peaceful and clean

  8. The big old stone house you were mentioning about is indeed the convent of the parish. The ground floor served as the parking space of the priest’s car and also the office of the parish.

Leading to the second floor are two old but polished flights of stairs. One could also see stained glass windows at the landing. my friend and I sneaked into the convent’s second floor and saw four relatively old paintings. Much of the spaces in the old convent are no longer used. But I have to say that it’s really huge.

      1. hi,

I miss my home town really. I have look all the pictures and the background of it made me even miss Sibonga. Mingaw didto kaayo walay pay mga tawo nga namoyo kaayo dili pariha og argao ba nga naanay beach nga na-develop og gamay. Sigoro anha nalang ko poyo sa akong gyud lugar nga natawhan since my mama is really from that area. I will visit to the town.

  9. sayang wala ang sa tulay amg gamda pa naman sana nun… im here in korea but someday i wish to get back home in my town sibonga… thankssssssssss

  10. hi thanks everyone for your posts. I am presently the designated municipal tourism officer of the municipality of sibonga. The province of Cebu is including in the E-GWEN program the heritage promotion which is the preservation of the towns heritage in all Cebu. in sibonga, aside from the old houses, church and convent, we also have the century old acacia trees and the watchtower or the bantayan sa hari located at basak, sibonga, this is a place served as japanese hide-out during the ancient times.

    1. Good move from the governor but alas, too late to preserve the old public high school buildings. A lamentable decision even at that time and a regrettable loss for the people of Sibonga.

  11. Nindot kay limpyo man,Hi my family name was Ylagan I was born in the north bogo town however I did live in my brothers house in basak mandaue and go to scool there .Now Im married and never been to sibonga hopefully when we come home with my husband will be able to have holiday there.

  12. Born and raised in Sibonga…The place has improve a lot since the last time I was there. We’re planning to build our dream house their because the place is quiet, clean and the people are nice. Can;t wait to bring my baby to my hometown to meet her relatives…

  13. I really missed Sibonga.. I have been there 3 years ago, but sad to say for only 3 weeks. Hopefully I will be their by sommer.))

    Nice park. and clean too

    1. It is truly amazing to be reading something BEAUTIFUL about my town. I am actually feeling slightly nostalgic, in a lovely kind of way. Well done to all of us Sibonganhons….

  14. the first old house in the picture is actually the “kumbento” or rectory/presbytery/parochial house where the priest(s) live.

    1. I was born .grew up and graduated in high school at sibonga town,i really miss the place,a place that I learnt a lot of experiences during my younger years, there is no other nice and sweet places to visit like home in sibonga ,our ancestral house near the public market. although Im roaming around the world, already But wish to visit back home soon, see you there.

  15. I know this town, because this is our way in going home by land to Negros Or., and back to Cebu City, during my college days. In the 70’s, these are quite little towns you’ll see along the way. You can see the century- old houses and other sturctures and I’m sure has a lot of history in it, especially the churches and the municipios. Thirty years after I drove here in 1975, it is still a very nice place to see. Kudos to the local gov’t to see the improvements being made, so with the rest of these towns from oslob, boljo-on, alcoy, dalaguete, argao, sibonga, carcar and on to the city. A lot of improvements has been made. Not to forget the town of Alegria on the western side, the ancestral home of my wife. Planning to make a round cebu tour in a few years, when retired. Kudos.

  16. I’m interested to stay in a place like this for a few months.
Can someone tell me if it’s close to nice beaches as I love to be in the water and if there are good apartments or small houses to rent in a monthly basis.
My budget is approximately 6000 to 1000th a month for housing.

    Salamat
