In Photos: Cebu Street Art

I noticed something on my way to work last Tuesday. There were a few ‘drawings’ on the wall of a house along Escario Street. The drawings were good. No, they were brilliant. They were not the ones made by young kids who just want to tell the world their names (wrongfully known as ‘mga vandals’). The drawings were inspired and well crafted. They were reminiscent of the graffiti you see in Hollywood movies.

I did some research and I learned that a growing art movement is slowly taking over Cebu.

UBEC, Cebu spelled backwards, is a small group of individuals who share the same passion for street or street-related art. Since Ubec is not really a group, anyone who does the same things is automatically a ‘member’. “Ubec” is also used to refer to Cebu Street Art in general.

The movement has been around for a while now. In fact, hundreds of ‘pieces’ (often but not always political in nature) can be found all over the city.

Here are some of them. (Photographed by Uzi and Yum)

    1. I know it’s an art but not all art brings beauty to the public streets. Might be a beauty to you but an ugly from the people, even I can say now that the streets is full of dangerous now a days that looks a rendezvous of the gang or dangerous group now of what’s place looks like now. You appreciate it as an art but some people don’t. Don’t generalize your beauty on what makes you think that all people think the same way you’ve think. You are not making Cebu a good place to look. If you are a citizen of Cebu, why not helping Cebu clean and green?
I’ve seen the artist is named “Uzi”. Mr.Uzi, please stop this. Not all street arts looks good in the street. Especially vandalism in the wall with an art. STOP THESE VANDALISM.

  1. How about the wall fence of the Queen City Memorial Garden sa North Reclamation Area. They were white washed after the Sinulog 2008 and advertised posted for new designs. Can we have those pictures posted please.

  2. This is a very good idea! Here in Montreal, there’s a place just for the artists to show off their art talents on the walls. Good arts is better than vandalism. Well done, artists!

  3. I’m sure these drawings were not just made at any one’s whim. How I wanted to know more of the story that the painter(s) would like to tell to us behind those colorful pieces.

  4. Street Art has been recognised by the art establishment. Four very large examples can be seen on the outside wall of Tate Modern in London.
I have previously posted examples of the great work shown at the Cans Festival Tunnel, Leake Street London.

  5. Kaila raba ko kinsay naghimo sa uban ani nga mga graffiti ug stickers… the Escario Graffiti beside bread and butter iyaha jud na hehehe. i met the guy once but dili mi close kay sila ra sa akong friends ang friends jud. Cool laid-back guy though hehe

  7. Good works for everyone! i would like to contact an artist for possible sharing of knowledge all about graffiti art. This purpose is for my feature article to be published in our university. I wish there would be one.

  8. This is a vandalism. It is an art but still painting as vandalism. This is making Cebu so dirty. I’m sure there are so many gangs in there living now a days. Cebu is dangerous already? They are making Cebu more worst city through this art. STOP VANDALISM AND RESPECT THE PUBLIC AUTHORITIES.
