Marcelo Fernan Bridge: World’s Longest Center Span Extradosed Cable-Stayed Bridge

Whew! That was a very long title. Haha!

Mactan Island and Cebu are connected by two bridges – Mactan Bridge 1 (which Cebuanos usually just call ‘first bridge,’) and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge aka ‘second bridge.’ The latter, which is a very welcome addition considering how fast Cebu’s growth is, was constructed with the help of the Japanese Government. The bridge has been featured in countless national TV programs (and even a full-length movie from Bigfoot). It has also become of the most important icons of Cebu.

So, without more yapping, let us check out the awesome second Mactan Bridge.

The Marcelo Fernan Bridge which connects mainland Cebu and Mactan Island.

To get to the second bridge via the city of Mandaue, you would have to take the United Nations Avenue.

Because it is a very busy road, numerous billboards can be seen along it.

Second half of the United Nations Avenue leading to the bridge approach.

A colorful ‘skywalk’ keeps the students in a nearby school safe when crossing the avenue.

Flags of member nations can be seen flying along the long avenue.

Now finally at the bridge and moving steadily towards the center.

So, here it is, ladies and gentlemen – the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge.

The Lapu-Lapu welcome sign greets visitors as soon as they cross the second half of the bridge.

More billboards are visible on the Mactan side of the bridge.

Finally. Welcome to Lapu Lapu City!

Checking out the scenes from under the bridge.

The Mactan Channel as seen from the park under the bridge.

The long stretch connecting the two main islands of Metro Cebu.

Locals enjoying a relaxing afternoon under the bridge.

The bridge’s underbelly looking really sturdy and safe.

Dating under the bridge? Why not?

An inter-island passenger ship traversing the channel towards the Cebu City port.

The ship passing underneath the bridge and heading straight to Cebu City.

A team is busy preparing for this night’s BisRock concert under the bridge.

According to the marker, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge is the world’s Longest Center Span Extradosed Cable-Stayed Bridge. Whew! Long, indeed.

A safe and enclosed area for kids to have fun and enjoy. Great!

  1. Wow! Cebu is truly a modernized city now even the overhead road signs are the same in Canada! Thanx for passing by in Mandaue City. Good that we can go to Mandaue via Fernan Bridge. It’s a beautiful bridge! I’ve been to Lapu Lapu City too. I just love the white sand beaches there!

  2. im happy that mactan – mandaue have a second bridge. to avoid traffic congestion and not getting late to the airport. my sister work in timex,

very lucky, vehicles are not paying toll pay. here in brisbane gateway bridge, small car is charge by $2.50 ea way.

land, how long you recon that mactan and fernan bridge. our brisbane gateway here is 1.63 km long. and i used to call this mactan bridge.

and i missed that ferry rides too, cebu-manila. the mandaue highways are clean, never see a litters.

  5. And why would you compare it to Hongkong and Japan? No one’s saying Cebu’s better than the cities in those countries.

You know what, I’ll take your advice. So I’ll do whatever I can (however small) to help MY country and MY city. Hope you’ll do the same for YOURS.

  6. Adolfo should buy himself a “good” mirror, basig hanap (or buak na) na iyang samin sa ilaha, para makit-an niya kung pinoy ba siya or hapon or intsik…. or is he a filipino at all? i dont think he knows the filipino word “kayo” means, and yet he’s using it in reference to us. feel sorry for this guy…. i’ll pray for him…. let’s pray for him… tsk, tsk, tsk 🙂

It is very true that both bridges has the touch of modernity, as they were newly built wtih new designs and concepts. the comments posted herein did not whatsoever make any comparisons. make a life of what you gonna post here, ‘tado!@

I am one of the engineers who built this bridge from 1997 to 1999 and we know our roles. After the project we are placed backstage and only few remembered that we worked almost 24 hrs. We proceed to the next project to continue our role in this world. . . to give convenience to mankind. . . . . .

  21. nibuhakhak og katawa kai nalingaw sa mga komento! hahahaha… amaw jud tos adolfo oi. pasagdi na lng to ninyo kai nakalitan kai nakagawas gikan sa smoky mountain sa manila. mas paet jud tong filipina nga nurse nga cge jud iningles nga pa trying hard ang accent maski kami ray iyang ka estorya. ana dayun cya namo ” i`ve been here for 14 years, i lost my language!” bwahahaha……. buhi pa ron si rizal, gkumbati na jud cya.

i can only thank those people who give their passion & time & effort in building the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. i live on the other side, the old Mactan Bridge, which is equally useful. Proud taga Lo-oc!

  22. ehehehe….ka-alegre ni dhong adolfo. pustahan nag-cg tog katawa sa mga reactions sa mga tawo diri pero nanghinaot ko nga mag-silbi pod tong leksyon sa iyaha. whether we want to or not naa gyuy mga tawo nga ingon ni adolfo, nga dali ra kaayo makalimot sa ilang gigikanan or maybe gusto lang gyud nilang kalimtan ilang gigikanan. ang problema kay bisan unsaon niyag lugod sa iyang panit, brown pa gihapon iyang kolor. kung moputi man gani, pislat pa gihapon iyang ilong.
anyway, to mr scade and the rest of the people involved in the two mactan bridges, kodus to all of you.

  23. ADDOLFO,

Your comment to CEBU is just sarcastic.YOu have belittled your own RACE.Least you have showed low disregard for MY CEBU.SHAME ON YOU!..Did you not know that ERAP never won in a single precinct here in MY PLACE.Did you know that actors and actresses never got a vote from us?Because we are intelligent voters composed of intelligent filipinos.Have a stay here for a year and you will notice rallys and public disturbance is non existent .Do you know MR JOEY DE VENICIA? when he came here to ask support from the cebuanos and never got one ?Even the speaking engagement he previously booked was cancelled and he even made a mockery of THE ARCHBISHOP?We CEBUANOS are intelligent enough to discern honest from make believe people.

Floods ,traffic, high cost of living has shun people from going to where your place is.The prestine beaches the night life ,modern facilities, highly literate community makes CEBU the best place to be.Few minutes and you are on the beach or in the CITY.If you ask people from your place,9 out of 10 of them owns a vacation home in CEBU.Visit CEBU and you will see the big difference. If you plan to come here my company will sponsor your flight and accomodation just to let you see and feel that your sarcasam and ignorance did not only shame you but has shamed our RACE.

Next time if you dont have any intelligent comments to say keep it to yourself or your ignorance will get back to you.

Give me a reply here and I will email you my yahoo email/ company email to arrange for your free stay here!

Leylander great pics…Hope you could post new pics..jones ave, club ultima, new ayala teracces,CNT letchon, mountain view etc…and let ADOLFO drrolll and discover how less traveled he is.

I apolgize for my strong worded comment,I just got really upset there are people who bad mouth his own kind.

    thanks!

  29. To my fellow Cebuano’s, can we ask to Adolfo where his roots begin? If my thought is right assuming he is, what can I say about him is that sa kasabihan ng mga Katagalogan (although I am a pure Cebuano) na kahit anong bihis ng damit ng matsing, ay MATSING PA RIN.

In addition since he is aware of word moderno but very shame on him for the ignorance the meaning of “STATE OF THE ART”

  30. im am very happy when the moments that i visit the place of cebu IT was my first time to travel there hehehe..very very nice.di jod nako mkalimtaN ang kgana og kaanindot sa lugar, labi na jod ang long bridge of mActan!im very thankful for this website for having good captured of the two bridges..THANK YOU! sana dili lang madugay makabalik ko dihaa..tapos makatongtong sa taas sa tulay.KATAGAW jod..hehehe blessed jud ang cebu.i love cebu..i miss u. from me surigaonon..

Really great pictures of Cebu! I am planning on visiting in summer 2011. It is the first place I will ever visit in Asia!

  32. Ummmmmm….melancholy! Before we migrated,i know I have to be in the best of shape. What I did was every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday I will cross these bridges.Walking not jogging, enjoying the view and just having a grand time. Boy, those long walks really prepared me for the physical challenges I’ve met. Very nice pictures!!

Sulong Sugbuanon!!!!
