Islam in Cebu City

A muslim friend from Davao who came to Cebu just recently, asked me where he could find a mosque here in the city. I only knew of one so I told him where it was. It’s the one located in Mambaling near the road which leads straight to Labangon. The mosque sits right next to the Shopwise Mall and across McDonald’s.

The mosque is easy to notice as the building can be seen along the highway.

The Moon and the Star are also very easy to notice when driving from Labangon area.

  20. I am new to Cebu. I was disappointed so much hate and discrimination towards Muslims in cebu. My first experience was in Ayala mall. An american who just retired in cebu with so much hate to muslims. He is trying to convince ayala management from allowing Muslims to enter the mall!! He is calling muslims and middle eastern as crazy violent people that should be deported from Cebu and the Phillipines!!

He is trying to buy his way and get away with his racist views. He is displaying so much hate, ignorance, anger towards muslims and middle eastern that he identifies as he is in the mall everyday.

How can we stop this hate, racism, violation of our basic rights to be treated with respect and dignity?

    1. Why do you assume he was American? Did he say he was or are you just guessing? The reason I ask is because there are a LOT of european, Australian, etc… in the Philippines.

  21. growing numbers of muslims here i hope, there would be no troubles or problems. i dont like it… sometimes i dont like these people

  22. Brother Ahmed:

We are glad we found this great website to share with you.

We were in Ayala mall few days ago, myself, my husband and our teen daughter. We visited Bos coffee next to Watsons. We had a bad experience with a man we want to know if he is the man you are referring to in your post. We sat in the terrace outside and when he saw us, he can tell from my cloth of our muslim faith. He was very loud, obnoxious and made ignorant remarks of islam and that we should not be in the mall. He kept starring at us then we can hear him calling security on the phone. A security guard came and the man pointed us and told him something. The guard knew him. The whole time we were there, the guard and the american man were starring at us which made us very uncomfortable. The guard watch us as if we criminals.

The hateful man, we heard some people call him Joe or Joey. The guard called him, Mr. Stuart.
He has grey short hair, color eyes (I think blue), short, about 165 – 170 cm and was wearing white shorts and light shirt. He was smoking the whole time and his face is very red. He was very vocal on his hate and anger of us being there.

We are visiting Cebu. My husband was very angry and our daughter was in tears about how we were treated. If this is the same person, we need to warn other brothers and sisters. He got ayala security on his side. I think he is buying people in that mall to do whatever he wants.

I do not know what is the best way to deal with this and if this is the right forum to discuss it. I do not think we will be visiting cebu again anytime soon.

    1. Whoever was that racist American guy does not represent Cebuanos at all. Cebuanos, are generally respectful ,open minded and neutral regarding other peoplès religious beliefs. He was clearly brainwashed by those in his country of origin (America that is) that Muslims or Islam religion is bad. Im hoping not to run into this obnoxious arrogant red neck in Ayala this year 2011 around December with my husband. If he is going to that that to us, rest assure he could face some series of legal action (racism allegations etc.) Im Cebuano born and raised as Catholic and converted to Islam 2006 in Toronto., My husband is a Canadian Muslim Turkish. So he better be careful with his mouth.
And special thanks to Mr. Leylard for this post…..very helpful thread!

  23. Thanks for the reply.

My teen daughter reminded me that he was wearing cowboy hat most of the time, his face was red wrinkled, about 60 yrs old, had a Mac apple notebook.. I hope no one will run into this hateful man.

  24. hey sup folks! am relocatin to cebu next year for ma mba studies..since im a muslim i’d pretty much like to mingle with muslim community over there..as a matter of fact im quite interested in marryin a muslim filipina 😛

  25. Assalamu aLaykum Brothers & Sisters.. 26. To our Brother Ahmed and Sister Mrs. S. Shaheen,
Assalamu alaykum wa rahamtullahi wa barakatuh!

We have already addressed your concerns by sending government officials to verify and if confirm we will take necessary course of action to stop this man (allege American foreigner) from flaunting insults. Rest assured we are making Cebu a Muslim friendly city.

We hope you enjoy your stay in Cebu and welcome.

For your concerns and assistance you may call National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF-Cebu ofc.) at their Telephone # – (032) 2560172 or to our Cebuano Imam – Ustadz Najib Razul at his telephone number – (032) 2737574 / Cellphone # 09293256301

    Wasalam.

  27. Thanks very much. We are proud of our brothers and sisters in Cebu for taking prompt action to stop this hate and discrimination. My daughter’s local friends tell us they saw this hateful man only once in the last 2 weeks.

Our hope that he stopped going to Ayala because officials confronted him about his abuse and disregard to our basic rights to enjoy peaceful living without these verbal attacks and insults that were unjustified.

Again, thanks for standing up for our rights. We are happy and lucky to find this site and join this strong community to address our concerns. When we come back to visit Cebu and will definitely be honored to meet you.

  28. Brothers & Sisters in Islam:

Thanks for this good website. We are visiting cebu and wanted to find a mosque near us, halal restaurants and value information here and connect to the muslim community in cebu.

We enjoy your pictures and travel. We are visiting from the middle east and really enjoy the beautiful weather, mactan resorts and the friendly people.

We were sad to read about the racist american on the site. We read about him before. His photos and information on several arabic websites for middle easterners coming to Phililipines. These websites keep these pictures for years till the situation resolved.

    Peace be with you.
    Ali

    Peace be with you.
    Ali

  33. Peace be with you.

We read about the racist american and where he goes in Ayala. We saw him this evening in Ayala as we were having dinner. He was making fun of a young man as the young man ( the young man looks like from Pakistan, Iran or middle east, wearing glasses and yellow shirt) was walking by Bos coffee where the american was sitting. He waited till the young man left then made some nasty comments.

We might post the american photos and post the link to avoid him if you run into him. He has no respect for our people.

    Ali

  34. Salam All,

  42. As a French Muslim, I was considering visiting Cebu until I read about this aggressive American man offending Muslims. I suppose I will choose another city in the Philippines instead. I know he doesn’t represent the residents of Cebu, believe me, but as a tourist I want to enjoy my stay (and shopping) without looking over my shoulder because of this individual. I hope the authorities do something about the situation.

  49. Do you know what is Gheebah, Buhtaan and Nameemah?
The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad peace be upon him warned against these three sins.
Gheebah is when you speak something about someone behind his back and if he were to hear it, he would dislike it.
Buhtaan is when you slander him, speaking lies about someone in his absence.
Nameemah is to spread malicious gossip.
O People! Be warned against these three severe sins and seek sincere repentance from Almighty Allaah before your time draws close.
Make most of Ramadaan. Seek Forgiveness and Increase your worship.. In sha Allaah

  65. Me and my wife are living in Minglanilla, Cebu. I am interested to build a mosque and madresa in Minglanilla. If someone really interested in it, please come forward.

    1. Wa Allaiikom Sallam wa Rahmatullah, in shaa Allah start with musalla asap before shaytaan makes you come up with excuses not to go on with the project. Find a scholar for imam, Rent musalla, paint signs and people will come. Then Masjid and Madrassat in shaa Allah. It takes passion not money. May Allah keep us,ameen

  66. Assalamu Alaykum! Is there a muslim group or association here in Cebu City?

I’m originally from Zamboanga City and came here to Cebu to work as a call center agent.

I am very interested in finding a community of muslim in the city. If there is, kindly send me an email at mraiyanasaral@gmail.com

There is nothing better than finding brothers and sisters in islam in a city populated by non-muslims.
